About Renton Housing Authority (RHA)

Tasked with building homes to support the middle and low-income workers amassed for the US engagement in World War II, the Housing Authority of the City of Renton formed in 1941 and created 5,000 dwellings in close proximity to the Boeing B-29 and PACAR Sherman Tank manufacturing lines.

Under the federal Lanham National Housing for Defense Act the cost per unit was capped at $3,000.

In the 1950s most of these affordable units, many of which stand today, were sold to the defense personnel for whom the housing was constructed. Renton Housing Authority (RHA) then in 1959 constructed Sunset Terrace on the existing infrastructure.
