Tasked with building homes to support the middle and low-income workers amassed for the US engagement in World War II, the Housing Authority of the City of Renton formed in 1941 and created 5,000 dwellings in close proximity to the Boeing B-29 and PACAR Sherman Tank manufacturing lines.
Under the federal Lanham National Housing for Defense Act the cost per unit was capped at $3,000.
In the 1950s most of these affordable units, many of which stand today, were sold to the defense personnel for whom the housing was constructed. Renton Housing Authority (RHA) then in 1959 constructed Sunset Terrace on the existing infrastructure.
The mission of the Renton Housing Authority (RHA) is to provide decent, quality, affordable housing in a safe environment to people with low incomes who make Renton their home. through partnerships with our clients, service providers and other groups, we will responsibly increase and enhance our housing programs while providing opportunities for those we serve to become self-sufficient.
